Most patients only need to take couple of days off work when undergoing IVF treatment. This is usually around egg collection which is generally done under conscious sedation. Depending on individual circumstances, most patients may need to take one or few hours off for follicular tracking and blood tests.
1 What does IVF stand for?
IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilisation. It is a type of assisted fertility treatment and may help couples facing difficulties with conceiving naturally. It involves controlled stimulation of ovaries using stimulation injections, follicular tracking, egg collection, inseminating eggs and sperms and transfer of one or more good quality embryo. It can be combined with other relevant procedures.
1 What is the age limit for IVF treatment?
The age limit for IVF is dependent primarily on the age and health of the female partner. Most IVF clinic have their own age criteria for treating women. In Northern Cyprus, Ministry of Health suggests fertility clinics offer IVF treatment to women who are less than 45 years old directly and offer IVF treatment to women ate the age of 45 or over with medical application and permission taken from The Ministry of Health.
1 How much does IVF treatment cost?

There is an additional cost for fertility drugs and depends on how you respond. There may be other additional cost which you should discuss with your fertility clinic before starting IVF treatment.
1 How does In Vitro Fertilisation work?
In vitro fertilisation or IVF, the eggs are inseminated with high concentration of sperms. This results in fertilisation of the eggs and creation of embryos. Implantation of one or more of these embryos results in pregnancy. It is particularly relevant for couples who are facing difficulties with conceiving after having tried naturally for reasonable period of time.
1 What is ICSI and how does it work?
ICSI is intracytoplasmic sperm injection procedure which is applied in an IVF laboratory by a specialist embryologist. It consists of injection of a selected sperm into an oocyte (egg) with specialized equipment. This procedure increases the chance of fertilization.
 7 Is IVF medication expensive?
The cost of the IVF medication depends on your treatment plan, prescribed fertility drugs and the patient’s response to these drugs. Few of the fertility drugs can be more expensive than others. The range is varied and it is best to check with the treating fertility clinic or fertility specialist.
 8 Why is IVF used?
It is used for a variety of causes of male and female infertility such as, blockage of fallopian tube, unexplained infertility. By combining with Intracytoplasmic sperm Insemination or Injection (ICSI) it helps in male infertility. It is also used for preventing transmission of genetic or chromosomal arrangement disorders by combining with preimplantation genetic or chromosomal screening of embryos.
9 What is the success rate for IVF treatment?
The success rate of IVF treatment depends on many factors such as age of female partner, ovarian reserve, cause of infertility, past fertility treatment outcomes. It can be reported as pregnancy rate, clinical pregnancy rate or live birth rate. Hence, the IVF success rate may vary from one fertility clinic to another.
10 What is IVF treatment process?
IVF or In vitro fertilisation involves controlled ovarian stimulation using fertility injections, follicular tracking, egg collection under sedation, fertilization of eggs with sperms and embryo transfer. Depending on treatment plan, it may a take a month from start to completion. All patients are seen or consulted by fertility specialist before starting IVF.
11 Advantages and disadvantages of IVF?
The advantage of IVF is that it helps couples in achieving pregnancy when they have failed naturally. It also helps same sex couples or single parents. Patients may suffer side effects from fertility drugs, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome or OHSS and multiple pregnancy.
12 What other procedures can be combined with IVF?
IVF can be combined with other assisted fertility procedures such as Intracytoplasmic sperm insemination (ICSI) or Intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm insemination (IMSI) for male infertility; with preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to prevent transmission of single gene disorders; and with preimplantation comprehensive chromosomal screening (CCS or PGS) to prevent chromosomal arrangement disorders.
13 Does IVF lead to twins and multiple births?
IVF treatment involves replacing one or more embryos into the uterine cavity. Hence, there is a higher chance of multiple pregnancy which can be twins or higher order. The risk of multiple pregnancy is much higher when transferring more than one embryo at day 5 or blastocyst stage than with day 2 or 3 cleaved stage transfer.
14 Are frozen eggs less effective than fresh eggs?
The effectiveness of frozen eggs is determined by the women’s age when the eggs were frozen, freezing technique and clinical factors when using these eggs for creating and replacing embryos. The vitrification of eggs as part of fertility preservation or elective egg freezing offers better outcomes than slow freezing technique but there is still no gold standart protocol for this procedure.
